What Is Biochar

THE OLDEST NEW THING YOU'VE NEVER HEARD OF

What is Biochar?

The earliest known use of biochar was by the pre-Columbian indigenous people of the Amazon over 2,000 years ago. Their practice of creating biochar was discovered when scientists tested how the soil remained rich for over eight hundred years even though there were no plants growing in the soil. Biochar is a high-carbon form of charcoal that is produced by heating organic matter, in the absence of oxygen, a process called "pyrolysis" and because of the purity it doesn't degrade so it is a permanent improvement to your soil.
Biochar permanently locks carbon into the ground, rather than releasing harmful CO2, into the atmosphere, so not only can you make a permanently improvement to your soil health, but you are simultaneously improving your carbon footprint.

By using enriched biochar products, you can bring a physical and permanent change to your soil, improving structure, aeration, water-hold capacity, and nutrient retention. Biochar has a honeycomb structure that acts as a refuge by the beneficial microbiology which we add to improve plant health. The means that they do not get leached by rainfall and are permanently available to your plants when they need them. It also acts like a series of mini reservoirs retaining water so, even in times of drought, you don’t have to water as often as you would without the addition of biochar.

In short, using Carbon Gold biochar is good for your garden and good for our planet!

What's in our enriched biochar

Biochar

A stable form of soil carbon with a naturally porous structure which improves aeration, water-holding capacity and nutrient retention of soils and acts as a refuge for beneficial soil microbiology. The building block of resilient soils.

Mycorrhizal Fungi

A natural soil fungi that form a symbiotic partnership with plants, acting as a secondary root system while using the biochar as a refuge.

Trichoderma

An antagonistic type of fungi that feed on soilborne pests, in defence of their host plant's root system, housed inside the biochar.

Wormcasts

Full of all the healthy bacteria and humic compounds that roots need to stay healthy.

Seaweed

Filled with trace minerals that are good for healthy plant stems and leaves.

BENEFITS OF ENRICHED BIOCHAR

Easy To Use

It's easy to apply and, because of its water holding qualities, it means less maintenance of plants, crops and lawns. It also means you'll save a bit on those water bills.

Permanent Effects

Biochar is so high in carbon that it doesn't break down over time, meaning one application is all you need to permanently improve your soil.

Environmentally Friendly

1 tonne of biochar in the ground is the equivalent of 3 tonnes of carbon dioxide permanently sequestered from the atmosphere!

Improves Plant Health

The London Borough of Bexley’s Tree and Nature Conservation team called upon Apex Soil Solutions;

to bring back to good health the Bexley Charter oak. Despite having a root protection zone erected, having mulch applied every year and even air-spading in the past, the Charter Oak was showing diminishing vitality and a reduced leaf area index.

Apex used their cutting edge Geo-Injector to drill down to 1.2m deep all around the tree base. Apex was able to decompact the soil and create pockets to be backfilled simultaneously with enriched biochar that completely encompassed the root zone.

The oak transformed to full health within 12 months.
